Sint-Godelieveabdij (St Godelina’s Abbey)
Benedictine nuns from Gistel settled here as early as 1623 after the turbulent Beggars (‘Geuzen’) era. A new, austere brick monastery was built some years later. The protected chapel (1626), the entrance building (1633) and the south wing (1634) can still be admired today, along with the cloister aisles and the former farmhouse. Inside the chapel, the carved Baroque altar, pulpit and choir stalls dominate.
The sisters remained in this convent until the end of 2013. They cherish silence and communicate with specific gestures, which they learn during the period leading up to their joining. Each day, bells set the rhythm for a ritual of prayer and work, ora et labora. The kitchen, the gardens, the sleeping cells, the consulting room: everything has its symbolism and meaning.
In January 2021, Visit Flanders was given a long lease on this site with its rich history. Research began into the soul of this special place and its future plans. St Godelina's Abbey in Bruges opened its doors during the summer of 2021, for the first time in nearly 400 years. Over 15,000 visitors seized this unique opportunity to contribute ideas for a new future for this religious heritage site. Finally, an expert team and architectural firm produced a master plan for the future.
All movable heritage of the abbey was temporarily moved. The masterpieces were given their place in the city's secure depository. All other equipment and furniture was moved to the Capuchin Monastery, across the street. A viewing window allows visitors to admire pieces from St Godelina's Abbey in a rotating exhibition. A quick peek into the abbey's garden is possible through the green gate at house number 49.
The grand reopening is expected in 2027 (subject to change). What can you expect to see? An orchard with picnic area, a kiosk with local products in the farmhouse, a kitchen garden as a collective co-working space, a visitor centre where you can learn about the story of the site, a cultural programme in the church, ... All of this keeps the spirit of the site alive and residents and visitors can enjoy it to the fullest.
