Sint-Jakobskerk (St James’s Church)
In the second quarter of the 13th century, the modest St. James’s Chapel was elevated to the status of a parish church. During the 15th century, this simple house of prayer was extended to its current size. The church is now famous for its rich collection of art treasures, donated by wealthy local people living nearby, and for its fine examples of funerary art.
A bronze scallop shell gleams next to the door. Indeed, St James’s Church is an important stop along the Via Brugensis. This medieval pilgrimage route to the Spanish pilgrimage site Santiago de Compostela can still be followed today. Throughout the city, some 40 shells will guide you from Damme Gate to the railway station. Keep your eyes peeled to the ground if you want to find the shells, as they are incorporated in the pavement.
