Provinciaal Hof (Provincial Palace)
Over the centuries, the eastern side of the Market Square was adorned by three iconic buildings. In mediaeval times, the 'Water Halls' – a warehouse where ships loaded and unloaded their cargo – stood here. In the late 18th century, a monumental neoclassical complex was built, with stores, cafés and apartments. After a fire in 1878, which largely burned down the complex, an impressive three-part neo-Gothic complex emerged.
At its centre is the impressive Provincial Court, which opened its doors to the general public in 2024 after a thorough restoration. The Provincial Court, as the home of the West Flanders provincial government's hospitality, welcomes everyone. You will discover the charm and rich history of this historic building and learn more about West Flanders, the province of which Bruges is the capital city. Enjoy delicious treats at ‘Hofcafé’, browse in the ‘Hofshop’ with its many regional delicacies or explore the ‘Hof der Dingen’, an exhibition of objects that are typical of West Flanders.
Did you know that the Provincial Court is also fully accessible for people with disabilities and has a changing place? You can read more about it in the brochure 'Oooh! Bruges, accessible for everyone'.
